Leadership Under Pressure

Pressure changes behaviour; and leadership is ultimately judged by how it lands.

Leadership Under Pressure

How to retain your edge; and land your leadership well

A candid, practical and performance-focused keynote helping leaders retain their confidence, judgement and humanity when the pressure rises.Leadership is relatively easy to describe when conditions are calm.

Overview

The real test is what happens when expectations rise, resources tighten, scrutiny increases and the consequences of getting things wrong become more significant.

Pressure can change the way even capable and well-intentioned leaders behave. We may listen less, decide too quickly, avoid difficult conversations, become overly controlling or stay silent when our voice is needed.

We rarely set out to create these effects. Nevertheless, our leadership is ultimately experienced through the way our behaviour lands on other people—and through the performance that follows.

Leadership Under Pressure is a candid, engaging and practical keynote about recognising those changes early, retaining the positive edge needed to perform, and making more deliberate choices about how we lead.

Human leadership with a performance edge

This is not an argument for leadership that is endlessly comfortable or agreeable.

Organisations need leaders who can:

  • make difficult decisions;

  • confront underperformance;

  • set clear standards;

  • challenge constructively;

  • act when information is incomplete;

  • remain accountable for results;

  • maintain momentum through uncertainty.

But edge without awareness can become aggression. Decisiveness can become impulsiveness. Confidence can become certainty. High standards can become relentless pressure. Empathy without accountability can be equally unhelpful.

Effective leadership holds both sides together: humanity and performance, confidence and humility, support and challenge.

The aim is not to remove pressure. It is to help leaders perform well within it without passing its negative effects unnecessarily to everyone around them.

The central idea

The keynote explores a straightforward leadership sequence:

  • Pressure influences our internal state.

  • Our internal state influences our behaviour.

  • Our behaviour creates an impact.

  • That impact affects trust, confidence and performance.

Leaders cannot always control the pressure they encounter. They can become more aware of their response and more deliberate about what happens next.

The session helps people move from an automatic reaction to a conscious leadership choice.

Grounded in lived leadership

Dave Thorne draws on extensive experience of leading people and organisations in demanding, high-consequence public-service environments.

His approach combines lived executive experience, education, coaching, leadership research and emerging evidence from his Leadership Under Pressure work.

The result is not a theoretical lecture or a motivational speech that is forgotten the following day. It is a grounded and honest conversation about what leadership demands, what pressure can do to good people and how leaders can continue to deliver without losing themselves, or those they lead, in the process.
